Beyond the Advice: Meet David Gilbert, CFP®, J.D.

At Mason, we talk a lot about the advice we give. This series is about the people who give it.

Beyond the Advice is a series where we hand our advisors ten questions and get out of the way. No talking points, no scripts, just their own words on the things that shaped them, the people they admire, and what makes them tick outside the office. Because good financial advice doesn’t come from a formula. It comes from someone who understands people, and that understanding starts with knowing who they are.

Next up, David Gilbert, CFP®, J.D.

A man with short gray hair and glasses is wearing a dark suit jacket over a light-colored shirt, smiling at the camera against a white background.

What first drew you to this work? (your story in your own words)

I began my career as a corporate attorney, but I didn’t enjoy the work. I realized I wanted to make a difference in the lives of individuals instead of corporations. I always had an interest in financial planning, I’m good with numbers, and my legal training gave me strong reading comprehension skills. Wealth management seemed like a natural fit, and I’m glad I made the change.

Who’s had the biggest influence on how you show up for clients? — a mentor, family member, early boss, etc.

Our founder, Bill Mason. He mentored me by attending almost every client meeting with me during my first year. He instilled in me early on the Mason value of service: doing everything we possibly can for each client, no matter how big or small the issue.

What’s a piece of advice that’s stuck with you over the years?

Always try to solve the client’s problem. Don’t delegate anything to the client that we can take care of for them.

What does an ideal Saturday look like for you?

Playing golf, watching sports on TV, exercising, or spending time with my wife.

What’s something most colleagues or clients would be surprised to learn about you?

I love the mountains, though I’m a day hiker, not a camper or backpacker. We’re close to the Sierra Nevada, with Tahoe and Mammoth nearby. I got engaged in Yosemite and spent a summer working in Jackson Hole. I’ve visited most national parks in the West, and I’ve also traveled to Alaska, New Zealand, Northern Norway, Switzerland, Austria, and the Dolomites in Italy. I’ve got several more spots on my bucket list.

What are you reading, watching, or listening to lately?

I’ve read several Ken Follett books lately, and I’ve been watching Your Friends and Neighbors, Hacks, and Ted Lasso. My favorite band is Rush, and they’re back for their R50 tour. I’ll be seeing them four times in 2026.

Is there a hobby, sport, or pastime you could talk about for hours?

Golf. My father introduced me to the game, and it’s my primary hobby. I love the challenge, the camaraderie, the course design, and being outdoors. My wife and twin sons play too, and after a lot of time and effort, I’ve reached my goal of being a single digit handicap.

What’s a moment, personal or professional, you’re genuinely proud of?

Watching my twin sons graduate from college this year: Owen from Loyola Marymount University, and Nick from Santa Clara University.

If you weren’t in this field, what would you be doing instead?

I’d probably be a teacher.

What’s a quality you admire most in the people you work with?

Discipline and attention to detail.

Who’s someone — living or not, famous or not — you’d love to have dinner with?

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush.

What’s a small thing that always puts you in a good mood?

Being outside.
